NSW Telco Authority Awards Pivotel Contract to Build and Operate Broadband Cells on Wheels

NSW Telco Authority has awarded Pivotel, Australia’s leading provider of regional, rural, and remote communication solutions, a contract to deploy four broadband Cells on Wheels (COWs).

The COWs are trailer-based communications solutions that provide rapidly deployable, large-area Wi-Fi and voice services for communities when they are impacted by network outages, particularly during natural disasters. The robust units will enhance disaster response and ensure that high volumes of users can simultaneously access continuous and dependable communications, bridging the connectivity gap and providing community members with access to vital services.

The introduction of these solutions forms part of the Western Sydney Floods Resilience Plan and demonstrates the New South Wales Government’s nation-leading approach of introducing solutions that address a range of connectivity challenges. Under the arrangement, Pivotel will supply and operate the four mobile communication units, further adding a resilient layer to the state’s preparedness as the natural disaster season approaches.

Peter Bolger, CEO of Pivotel, said, "We are honoured to partner with NSW Telco Authority to deploy our broadband Cells on Wheels (CoWs) solution and we commend the NSW Government for leading this groundbreaking initiative in Australia. The introduction of these solutions demonstrates a significant step forward in disaster preparedness, creating a robust system for maintaining communication services in areas prone to network disruptions. Whether during floods, bushfires, or other emergencies, these COWs will help reinstate connectivity, enabling the timely coordination of emergency response efforts and supporting community resilience.”

Darren Cooley, Sales Director at Pivotel, added, "At Pivotel, we take great pride in listening closely to the needs of our customers, and NSW Telco Authority is no exception. We’re thrilled to have been awarded this contract, these units have been specifically designed to meet the NSW Government’s distinct requirements and deliver connectivity in times of crisis. Our dedicated field services team, in collaboration with our 24-hour Network Operations Centre, will deploy these valuable resources whenever and wherever they are needed, ensuring communities can remain connected during critical moments."

Pivotel expects the rollout of these advanced mobile communication units to be completed and ready for operation by the end of 2024, strengthening the NSW Government’s ability to respond to emergencies and provide essential communication services to those in need.
