Pivotel acquires US satellite solutions company to offer faster Internet for consumers

Leading Australian telecommunications provider, Pivotel, has today announced the acquisition of North American satellite solutions company, Global Marine Networks (GMN) as part of an accelerated push into the satellite data communications market.

GMN’s core products are focused on speeding up satellite data while also lowering usage costs. The acquisition offers greater access to the GMN product portfolio and its team of developers, including the GMN RedPort brand of satellite VoiP, data routers and services.

The procurement of the Tennessee-based company facilitates greater levels of integration with Pivotel’s broad suite of satellite technologies and provides Pivotel with a foothold in the North American market through which Pivotel plans to expand the sales of existing Pivotel products.

Pivotel CEO Peter Bolger said the acquisition was a natural fit with the GMN product suite providing solutions to the satellite industry’s pain points of slower and more expensive data downloads.

"Satellite phone technology has come a long way in a few short years. Data downloads are comparatively slow, sometimes painfully slow, and are notoriously expensive on a satellite network, but we know our customers increasingly need to access the Internet and apps for both business and personal use," Mr Bolger said.

"It makes sense then, for us to partner with a leading satellite solutions developer, to offer our customers with access to faster, more affordable content for an improved user experience. By bringing their expertise in-house we are also able to develop more tightly integrated solutions that leverage Pivotel’s network infrastructure."

Pivotel hangs up the quarter with greatest telco customer satisfaction

Leading Australian mobile telecommunications provider, Pivotel, has recorded the lowest customer complaints in reporting history, according to the latest Complaints in Context (CIC) report released jointly by Communications Alliance and the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) today.

In the latest quarter, April to June 2017, Pivotel saw just 0.3 reported complaints per 10,000 customers, which is a record low since the Complaints in Context (CIC) reporting commenced in December 2014, with historical quarterly data provided from the July to Sept 2013 quarter.

Pivotel Executive Director Robert Sakker attributed the results to the company’s ongoing commitment to providing their customers with unparalleled service levels and innovative products designed to be intuitive and easy to use.

"Pivotel has historically had very low numbers of complaints compared to other telco providers, but it’s really encouraging to see our willingness to go the extra mile for our customers has positioned us as the best in the industry this quarter," Mr Sakker said.

"We would love to see other Communications Alliance members and industry participants join in the Complaints in Context reporting, and encourage them to be as open as we and the other four telecommunications service providers are about our customer service levels."

Pivotel to upgrade data network to take advantage of next-generation Iridium service

Queensland-based satellite provider Pivotel will upgrade its voice and data infrastructure to prepare for enhanced services on the next-generation Iridium low-earth orbit satellite system. It follows the launch earlier this week of a further 10 satellites in Iridium's NEXT satellite constellation.

Pivotel executive director Robert Sakker told CommsDay that significantly improved mobile data services would be available to Australian users next year. However, he said existing users would see ongoing improvements in call quality immediately.

Following the most recent launch, there are now 20 Iridium NEXT satellites in orbit, with the initial batch already integrated into the constellation and providing service. Launch provider SpaceX will eventually deliver 75 Iridium NEXT satellites to lowearth orbit, with 66 making up the operational constellation.

The first Iridium satellites only provided a 2.4kbps data service. However, Sakker said new terminals to be available in the first half of next year for Iridium NEXT would offer data speeds of 352kbps, both for downloads and uploads. This would be increased to downloads of 704kbps and eventually 1.4Mbps in future generations.

Sakker said that Pivotel was preparing for the enhanced data capabilities now. "What we'll be basically be putting in is direct IP backbones into the Iridium network so that we can take that data straight from the Iridium network all the way back to our network here in Australia and then to distribute it out to our customers," he said.

"The benefit of doing that is that we can manage the quality of the transmission but also we can provide a secure connection to customers like in the energy industry, where they are very sensitive about data not going over the public internet. They can directly connect to our network here in Australia and know that the data is secure," Sakker added.

Pivotel is one of two carriers in Australia that provide Iridium services, with Telstra also offering the network. Sakker said that customers cover a range of sectors including all levels of government, mining, transport and agriculture. It has around 35,000 subscriptions on Iridium, both for dedicated voice as well as messaging services.

Another key user in Australia is emergency services such as police, fire and ambulance and Sakker said there would be major improvements for these groups with the next generation satellite. "We'd be able to take them from a handheld asset tracking solution right up for them to get remote video sent back to centrally manage fire and floods. There's going to be a broadcast capability over these satellites as well, so if you're running a fleet of emergency services out in a danger zone you can actually broadcast a message to all of those devices at once," he explained.

As well as providing a mobile solution, Pivotel is aiming to provide basic broadband to fixed locations. "Some of their remote sites don't have a good connectivity solution today because they see VSAT as being too expensive to deploy, so with this lower cost broadband capability that's coming next year some of their remote outposts and certainly their mobile command centres will for the first time able to be cost effectively connected in an IP network and that will have significant communication benefits for those remote emergency services," he said.

Iridium Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:IRDM) announced it has received a targeted launch date of mid-June for the second mission of ten Iridium NEXT satellites. Originally anticipated for mid-April of 2017, the date has shifted due to a backlog in SpaceX's launch manifest as a result of last year's September 1st anomaly. This second launch will deliver another ten Iridium NEXT satellites to low-Earth-orbit (LEO) on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. SpaceX is targeting six subsequent Iridium NEXT launches approximately every two months thereafter.

"After such a successful first launch, we are eager to maintain the momentum until our network is completed," said Matt Desch, chief executive officer at Iridium. "Even with this eight week shift, SpaceX's targeted schedule completes our constellation in mid-2018."

This announcement comes as Iridium has successfully connected the first Iridium NEXT satellite via its crosslinks into its global LEO constellation. The new satellite is expected to begin providing service to Iridium customers in the coming days. This marks a major milestone for the Iridium NEXT program as the testing and validation phase is ahead of schedule and the satellites are working well.

Iridium Announces Successful First Launch of Iridium NEXT Satellites

Iridium NEXT Constellation Refresh Begins – First Ten Satellites Delivered to Low- Earth Orbit

(NASDAQ:IRDM) announced today the successful launch of its first ten Iridium NEXT satellites. The satellites were delivered into low-Earth orbit approximately one hour after the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 9:54:39 a.m. PST. Iridium NEXT is the company’s next-generation satellite constellation, replacing and enhancing its existing network of low-Earth orbit satellites spanning the entire globe – the largest commercial satellite constellation in space.

This is the start of a series of Iridium NEXT launches scheduled over the next 18 months, and marks the beginning of one of the biggest “tech refreshes” in history, completely replacing the only satellite constellation providing 100-percent truly global communications coverage. Once fully deployed, Iridium NEXT will enable a new broadband multi-service capability called Iridium Certus^SM, while providing the technical flexibility to support innovative new services and technologies from Iridium’s extensive partner network. Among those technologies is a unique hosted payload from Iridium’s partner Aireon, which will provide a real-time global aircraft surveillance service, extending aircraft visibility across the planet.

The first ten Iridium NEXT satellites were delivered to a 625 kilometer (km) temporary parking orbit where they will be tested and exercised by Iridium over the coming weeks. Upon meeting testing and validation requirements, the satellites will then be moved into their 780km operational orbit and begin providing service to Iridium’s customers. One-by-one, the new satellites will be positioned near a current generation satellite, each moving at approximately 17,000 miles per hour as testing begins. Iridium’s unique inter-satellite communication links from nearby satellites will be repositioned to point to the new Iridium NEXT satellite as it prepares to take over service. Existing satellites will eventually be de-boosted and de-orbited.

Mr. Desch said the issue hasn’t sparked any customer complaints. But he added that additional satellite failures could have a significant impact on service spanning larger areas, at a time when rivals such as London-based Inmarsat PLC are ramping up competing broadband and aeronautical services.

Both Thales Alenia Space, System Prime Contractor for the program, and their subcontractor for production, Orbital ATK, have been integral in the development of the Iridium NEXT program, from the design and manufacturing of the Iridium NEXT satellite vehicles to managing an 18-station, state-of-the-art assembly line production system.

NBN Eyes 2020 for Completing Australia-Wide Broadband Rollout

Australia’s National Broadband Network Company (NBN Co.), the state run telecommunications company tasked with closing the country’s digital divide, says it is on track to complete its network by 2020. The company released its Corporate Plan 2017 on Aug. 30, outlining how NBN is aiming to complete the network rollout of high-speed broadband internet to all Australian premises within that timeframe, which will include the launch of the second of two satellites, Sky Muster 2, in early October 2016.

Sky Muster 1 launched aboard an Ariane 5 rocket last year, and its twin, Sky Muster 2, arrived at the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, on Aug. 31 after completion by manufacturer Space Systems Loral (SSL) for an October launch. The identical Ka-band High Throughput Satellites (HTS) aim to provide advanced satellite services to rural parts of the country that currently have either limited or no connectivity. NBN started providing service with the first satellite this year, and once commercial service is switched on for both, the company aims to deliver high-speed broadband internet service via satellite to an estimated 400,000 Australians.

"The NBN mission, is to serve Australians with fast, quality broadband," NBN Co.’s Program Director for Satellites Matt Dawson told Via Satellite in an interview earlier this year. The NBN system will use a combination of terrestrial and satellite delivery methods, to reach the entire country, for which satellite is only responsible for reaching 3 percent of the total populace. To be able to service 100 percent of the Australian population, NBN anticipates reaching 20 percent by optical Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), 38 percent by existing Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN), 34 percent by Hybrid Fiber/Coaxial (HFC) cable already deployed by pay-TV companies, and 5 percent by Fixed Wireless (FW).

While only a single-digit percentage of all premises in Australia will have a Sky Muster connection, that nonetheless represents more than 11,000 homes and businesses in the Northern Territory of Australia alone, according to a recent release by NBN.

"The value of the satellite broadband service delivered through the program brings is that for 3 percent of the Australian population, those living in some of the most remote areas of the country and those that currently simply don’t have access to the same quality of life applications, will now have access to those life-changing benefits only satellite can deliver," Dawson said. "Satellite will go a long way to help with the very real digital divide."

According to the 2017 Corporate Plan, the combined capacity of both satellites will be 135 Gbps — equivalent to more than 30 times the capacity of the interim satellite service. Beyond reaching rural citizens, the satellites could service other applications.

"In terms of other products that the NBN satellite could bring to market, we are already working on in-flight connectivity and education/distance learning markets. After the initial launch of the product aimed at the residential market, we will be looking at more business-orientated products as well as markets like emergency services," Dawson added.

Moving forward with hooking up homes and businesses, NBN says it is progressing to complete the network build by 2020 with peak funding of $49 billion and finish the rollout — connecting an estimated 8 million premises — by the end of the decade. The network promises to deliver access to at least 25 megabits per second (Mbps) downstream to all premises and at least 50 Mbps downstream to 90 percent of fixed line premises.

The company is on track to activate more than 600,000 homes this year through all technologies on their network, more than At its peak installation rate, in 2019, NBN has forecasted it will activate high-speed internet at more than 2.5 million new premises.

"We are on track to make fast broadband available to everyone in 2020," CEO Bill Morrow said in a statement outlining the rollout plan. "We have managed to de-risk many of our previous assumptions with greater experience, increased planning and data accuracy and contracts in place with our partners … the road ahead is steep. We are realistic about the challenges and we are well aware of the risks. We have never been better prepared to manage the successful delivery of the NBN network."

Aging Iridium Network Waits for Key Satellite Replacements

Roughly 80% of Iridium Communications Inc. ’s 1990s-vintage satellites are operating without in-orbit spares, further raising the stakes for launching replacements on a Space Exploration Technologies Corp. Falcon 9 rocket slated for the fall.

With two of its remaining 66 core satellites out of operation after nearly two decades—and a single backup satellite available for only a small portion of the reduced constellation—Iridium is betting on the coming launch of 10 next-generation spacecraft scheduled between mid-September and the beginning of October.

Earlier plans for a 2014 or 2015 launch fell apart because of satellite-manufacturing delays and launch-schedule setbacks, so now the company is trying to meet a commitment to replace its entire fleet and get it into commercial operation by the end of 2017. The satellites, built by Thales SA of France, include technology enabling space-based surveillance and emergency tracking of airliners around the globe.

"We’re really past the point of moving" backup satellites to shore up the existing constellation, Iridium Chief Executive Matt Desch said in an interview Monday. So far, he said, two small "holes" in the company’s global coverage near the equator have had only a marginal impact on overall service, prompting selected signal disruptions stretching, at most, several minutes.

Mr. Desch said the issue hasn’t sparked any customer complaints. But he added that additional satellite failures could have a significant impact on service spanning larger areas, at a time when rivals such as London-based Inmarsat PLC are ramping up competing broadband and aeronautical services.

Iridium’s chief executive also said that it could take a year or more to move the single remaining spare into proper position to respond to a future operational failure, unless that failure affected one of 11 satellites in a specific orbit.

For about the past two years, Iridium’s management and its customers, including the Pentagon, have worried about the prospect of additional in-orbit failures leading to possible degradation of service. The two most recent satellite failures happened earlier this summer.

Earlier this month, a spokesman for SpaceX, as the launch company based in Hawthorne, Calif., is called, said specific dates for the Iridium mission hadn’t been publicly announced. Mr. Desch has told analysts he expects the launch of 10 spacecraft to occur between Sept. 19 and Oct. 1, with a follow-up mission slated for mid-December lifting 10 more satellites into low-Earth orbit.

In the interview, Mr. Desch said his biggest current headache is to get the next launch off successfully to be able to offer new services. If the launch goes smoothly, it would kick off a complex chain of orbital testing; precision in-flight maneuvers to insert the replacements into correct position while removing current satellites; and a subsequent series of launches of additional satellites.

Adhering to a tight launch schedule calling for blastoffs every few months also is important because Mr. Desch said many prospective users, including the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, are waiting to see the performance of the new batch of satellites before committing to contracts for aviation-related services.

"A lot of the customers are waiting to see" the quality of the data "coming off the satellites," Mr. Desch said. FAA and industry officials are conducting a cost-benefit analysis, and the agency is expected to make a decision sometime next year. As part of the stopgap FAA reauthorization bill Congress adopted last month, lawmakers ended up stripping out language that would have provided a boost for Iridium’s U.S. marketing efforts.

Government officials and senior air-traffic control managers in various countries, including Russia, have signed preliminary documents indicating interest in possibly purchasing satellite services from Aireon LLC, a venture that includes Iridium, Canada’s air-traffic-control provider and other traffic-control organizations world-wide as investors. Payloads to provide such services are installed on Iridium’s next-generation spacecraft. The aviation arm of the United Nations also is studying how Aireon can help carriers meet standards for universal aircraft tracking.

First Iridium NEXT Satellites Declared Ready for Shipment and Launch Date Announced

Assembly, integration and testing of the satellites are performed by Thales Alenia Space and their subcontractor, Orbital ATK, at the Orbital ATK manufacturing facility in Gilbert, Ariz. The production process incorporates a unique, assembly line system consisting of 18 different work stations ranging from panel integration and payload testing to full satellite integration, solar array installations and alignment checks. Each satellite features more than 5,000 individual parts assembled, culminating in one hundred thousand hours of workmanship by hundreds of engineers. A total of 81 satellites are scheduled to roll off of this assembly line, with 66 serving as the operational satellites to replace the existing Iridium® network, and the remainder serving as ground and on-orbit spares.

Following assembly and integration, the first satellites underwent a series of tests to ensure the vehicles met design specifications, as well as production tests to verify the quality of the manufacturing process. Some of those tests included vibration and acoustic testing, which simulated the movement and sound pressures experienced during the launch, while thermal vacuum tests created the temperature extremes the satellites will face while in orbit. These tests allowed the engineers to confirm that the satellites would withstand the launch and operate successfully when deployed. "The scale and complexity of the Iridium NEXT constellation is unprecedented in the satellite community outside of Iridium, requiring that the engineers balance delivering high-quality satellites designed for high-rate manufacturing, with a unique fully processed payload while maintaining an efficient schedule," said Bertrand Maureau, executive vice president of telecommunication at Thales Alenia Space. "We're thrilled to ship the first batch of Iridium NEXT satellites, as they represent the culmination of the team consortium work including worldwide partners and all the main Thales Alenia Space entities."

Along with measuring the quality of the satellite production, the testing phases helped validate that the assembly line is fully qualified to move to high-rate production. During the last three months, the number of assembly, integration and testing engineers working on Iridium NEXT has doubled at Orbital ATK's facility. With the vast resources and aerospace engineering talent in the Phoenix area, the team plans on adding another 30 engineers as production increases to complete more than five satellites per month. "The Iridium NEXT production process features a unique assembly-line approach inspired by the production of Iridium's initial constellation which launched over 19 years ago," said Frank Culbertson, president of Orbital ATK's Space Systems Group. "While certain stations require more hours of efforts than others, each represents a critical step toward delivering a fully functioning Iridium NEXT satellite. Now that we have standardized the entire process, we are excited to ramp up the production rate to meet Iridium's needs and support the successful completion of a truly transformative program."

The first two completed Iridium NEXT satellites are being shipped to Vandenberg Air Force Base for processing by Iridium's launch partner, SpaceX. As the remaining eight first-launch satellites are completed, they will also be shipped two at a time to the launch site. While the satellites will be ready by August, the earliest launch date available to Iridium from SpaceX and Vandenberg Air Force Base is September 12th. During processing, Orbital ATK is responsible for fueling the satellites, while also performing software validation and testing to ensure the satellites integrate properly with the SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets. The Iridium NEXT satellites represent SpaceX's heaviest payload to date.

All Iridium NEXT satellites are scheduled for launch by late 2017. Starting in 2018, the Iridium NEXT constellation will enable Aireon's satellite-based system to provide global aircraft surveillance in real time. New monitoring system critical for remote safety

KEEPING remote workers safe and addressing duty of care requirements is critical for the oil and gas industry. As unconventional gas exploration increases, people are working more than ever in remote areas where there are no mobile or radio networks.

Satellite communications company Pivotel recognised the occupational health and safety requirements of the oil and gas industry and developed Tracertrak, an exception management and remote worker monitoring system that uses handheld satellite communications devices such as the SPOT GPS Messenger or inReach two-way satellite communicator.

Tracertrak automatically monitors for scheduled worker check-ins, also known as ‘skeds’. If a check-in is missed the system will automatically send an alert to the safety administrator, removing the need for expensive, manned check-in desks.

Remote workers can also raise an SOS alarm including a GPS location in the event of an emergency so the safety team can raise an appropriate response.

“Tracertrak operates using satellite networks, meaning no mobile black spots, so remote workers can check-in, send emergency messages or communicate via messaging with head office wherever they are,” Pivotel chief executive Peter Bolger said.

THE oil and gas industry has long been known for its innovation. As exploration spreads across a wider area, the deployment of technology to monitor and automate systems and equipment becomes much more critical. With operators looking to minimise costs, the deployment of SCADA systems for well site monitoring and control, compressor monitoring, pipeline monitoring and site surveillance has become increasingly important.

Pivotel was proud to be a sponsor of the 2014 Big Red Run held in the Simpson Desert in July 2014. Participants complete this epic run to raise money for Type 1 Diabetes research. Runners began their journey in Birdsville, QLD and completed 5 marathons over 6 days.

The inReach 2-way satellite communicator was used by participants to track their run and also for their friends, family and team sponsors to follow their progress throughout the event using Tracertrak. Event organisers used the Thuraya IP Data satellite broadband terminal for their crucial event communications and for their data connection to access the Tracertrak portal to monitor event runners. The Big Red Run event raised money for Type 1 Diabetes research and awareness, this is a great result that Pivotel was proud to be part of.

Thuraya Telecommunications.

Globalstar, Inc. (NASDAQ: GSAT), today announced that the deployment of its second-generation constellation has entered the home stretch with the planning of an early February launch with its launch services provider, Arianespace. A successful fourth launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and subsequent deployment of the satellites will complete the return of the high quality and reliable service that Globalstar users have historically enjoyed.

With three launches already complete, current subscribers and new users are experiencing significantly improved performance and reliability with the industry’s highest voice quality, fastest mobile satellite handset data speeds and the most affordable service. Channel partners are also enjoying greater demand for product as well as increased inquiries regarding Globalstar’s resurgence.

The next few weeks will be extremely busy for Globalstar’s Space Operations Team as the fourth launch campaign begins. Satellite manufacturer Thales Alenia Space has confirmed that the review and shipment of these six spacecraft will be completed by the end of October, allowing pre-launch preparations to begin at the Cosmodrome for an early February launch. A launch during the first week of February allows Globalstar to place two of the new satellites into service almost immediately after launch.

Globalstar also announced that all but one of the previously launched satellites have now been placed into service as of September 29th. The one remaining satellite is already in its operational plane and is awaiting the upload of a software upgrade to remedy the previously reported momentum wheel issue. Globalstar expects to receive the software upgrade from Thales in mid-October, upload it into the satellite and then place it back into operation. This upgrade will be available for Globalstar’s other second generation satellites, if necessary.

Go for launch - Globalstar Announced Launch Date for Six New
Second-Generation Satellites

Globalstar, Inc. (NASDAQ:GSAT), a leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, government, and recreational consumers today announced that the second launch of six new Globalstar satellites is scheduled for July 11, 2011 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The Company also announced that engineers and technicians from launch services provider Arianespace and satellite manufacturer Thales Alenia Space have completed fueling of the satellites and all six spacecraft have now been mated to the upper stage dispenser of the Soyuz launch vehicle.

Boeing to provide system integration and testing support for
next-generation Iridium Satellite Network


The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] announced today that it has received a contract from Thales Alenia Space to provide system integration and testing support for Iridium NEXT. Iridium NEXT is the next-generation satellite constellation being designed, built and launched by Iridium Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: IRDM). Thales Alenia is the prime contractor for Iridium NEXT. This long-term contract, extending through 2017, allows Boeing to continue its strong partnerships with both Thales Alenia and Iridium. In July 2010, Iridium also announced that it extended its long-term relationship with Boeing for satellite network operations support for the current Iridium constellation as well as Iridium NEXT.

Globalstar Prepares Six New Second-Generation Satellites for July Launch

Covington, LA , June 08 2011 - Globalstar, Inc. (NASDAQ:GSAT), a leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, government, and recreational consumers today announced that six new Globalstar satellites are now being prepared for the second launch of the Company's secondgeneration satellite constellation.

Engineers and technicians from launch services provider Arianespace and satellite manufacturer Thales Alenia Space have begun the necessary testing and integration process in preparation for a July liftoff using the highly reliable Soyuz launch vehicle. Later this year Globalstar plans to conduct two additional launches of six satellites per launch also using the Soyuz. In October 2010 the same launch vehicle was used to successfully launch six new Globalstar second-generation satellites.

Globalstar Announces Launch Schedule for New Satellites

Globalstar, Inc. (NASDAQ:GSAT), a leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, government, and consumers today announced information regarding the launch of its new second-generation satellites. Globalstar expects to conduct the next launch of six satellites in May plus two additional launches of six satellites per launch within 60-90 days following the previous launch. All three launches will utilize the highly reliable Soyuz launch vehicle and each will be conducted from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. In October Globalstar successfully launched six new second-generation using the Soyuz.
